ISLAND CONTINENT TOURS

 

 

1°] ON THE ROAD TO NATURE WONDERS

5 nights - 6 days

The northern part of Madagascar is a sample of the big diversity which makes Madagascar so attractive. Start is from Diego with its large bay  (said to be the second most beautiful bay after Rio), then follows the rainy forest of “Montagne d’ambre” known for its multitude of orchids and its different kinds of lemurs and chameleons. This is combined with the famous pinnacle of “Tsingy d’ankarana” with its dry vegetation. The module ends in Nosy be, known for its beautiful beach.

 

DAY 1: TANA - DIEGO

Arrival in Diego. Transfer to Hotel Panorama. Diego is situated in the north of Madagascar, it is the place where the first European landed to the island. Surrounded by the "Mozambique channel" and the "Indian Ocean" it offers a spectacular sight with its numerous bays and beautiful beaches. This is the domain of Antakarana (Those-of-the-rocks) people; they are fishers or cattle raisers whose rulers came from the Sakalava dynasty. Their houses are usually raised on stilts. DAY 2 : AMBER MOUNTAIN: 37 KM

Day excursion to Montagne d'Ambre National Park. Situated in the high mountain of Ambre, this park is very rich with a huge tropical forest, with an endemic fauna and flora, luxuriant vegetation and many waterfalls. Exploration of the park with a special guide. A huge tropical forest about 18,200 ha it covers a volcanic massif composed mainly of basaltic rocks. Numerous rivers arise here and flow out in different directions, so the park is a vital water catchments area for the nearby town in Diego Suarez. There are several attractive crater lakes and some spectacular waterfalls. Much of the park is covered with upland tropical moist forest, with numerous giant trees, smaller ferns and several species orchids. The reptile fauna is impressive, stump-tailed chameleon, snakes, insect life is particularly rich. Night in the same hotel

 

DAY 3: AMBER MOUNTAIN - ANKARANA: 140 km

After breakfast, continuation to Ankarana that we reach within 3 hours. Then we start our day exploration of  the "Tsingy Ankarana", where the limestone highland has been worked by the erosion and which gives us the impression of walking on a spiny land. It offers us an extraordinary spectacle. The vegetation itself is as unusual as the Tsingy itself. The area consists of 18,225 ha covering a massif of Jurassic limestone rising abruptly from a surrounding savannas-like plain. Dominant canopy trees include Dalbergia and casia various figs, and superb specimens of the baobab Adansonia madagascariensis, numerous palms. The Tsingy harbours a fascinating assemblage of drought-adapted succulent plants. These include Pachypodium decaryi , Adenia neohumbertii and so on...Abundant wildlife in forested canyon.  In the afternoon, drive to Ambilobe that we reach within 30 minutes. Night on CAMPING

 

 

DAY 4: ANKARANA - ANKIFY  - NOSY BE: 180 km

Departure after breakfast to be at Ankify at 12.00. We start our drive to Ankify around 08.00 across the coffee, cacao and ylang ylang  plantation. This 5 hours drive will bring us to  a volcanic and the most fertile land of Madagascar. Then we pass the mountain chain of Tsaratanana, the 1st peak of the island. Stop to Ambilobe to visit the picturesque market of this Muslim city, drive to Ankify where we take the boat to Nosy be. Situated on the mainland on beautiful beach, Ankify is the main harbour to Nosy Be; we will see many small speed boats with many goods and many passengers waiting for the boat to Nosy Be.

Arrival in Ankify around noon. The car will bring us to the harbour where a speed boat is waiting for us to transfer us until NOSY BE. This boat transfer lasts about 1 hour, so we'll arrive in Nosy Be around 13.30. Night in NOSY BE HOTEL*** / BOUCANIER**.

 

Day  5: NOSY BE

Day free. Many excursions are possible to the many isles around Nosy Be. One of them is the combination of Nosy Komba-Tanikely which are tiny isle on the south east of Nosy be, it is doted with the most beautiful beaches with white sand and sea of emerald colours. Named as «the kingdom of black lemurs", it is a place where we can see the lemurs maccacco maccacco which are endemic in the north. Along the small village we will see many embroidery made by local women to sell to the tourists coming to the isle, then continuation to Nosy Tanikely, the best spot for snorkelling and diving. Night in the same hotel

 

Day 6: NOSY BE - TANA

Morning free. Transfer to the airport Fascène to fly back to Tana.  Arrival in Ivato airport then connection  for international flight to Paris.

2°] THE LAND OF AYE-AYE

9 nights - 10 days

The eastern part of Madagascar is known for its luxuriant vegetation and its many huge tropical rainforests. This module is designed for people who adore nature: the region of  Maroantsetra with its rainforest shelters the unique and threatening lemurs species of Aye Aye, then the sailing along the “canal des Pangalanes” with its green landscape, and finally the expedition in “Andasibe Special Reserve” which is known for “Indri Indri”, the largest lemurs in the country.

 

Day 1 : TANA - MAROANTSETRA ( flight once per week )

After breakfast, transfer to the airport, assistance for flight to Maroantsetra via Tamatave. Situated in the north-east, nestled at the Bay of Antongil, it is an idyllic little village. Maroantsetra is a Mecca for nature lovers, as it is the starting point for expeditions to the near by island reserve of Nosy Mangabe.

Night at RELAIS MASOALA**

 

Day 2 : MAROANTSETRA : Excursion NOSY MANGABE

After breakfast , transfer by boat during half an hour to go to Nosy Mangabe, it is situated in the bay of Antongil, 7 km from Relais du Masoala  in the provinces of Tamatave. This 500 ha island is composed of granite rocks rising quite steeply out of the sea. Nosy Mangabe, a nature reserve set up especially to protect the aye - aye ( Daubentonia Madagascariensis ), a rare species of lemur .The small, cone - shaped island is cloaked with rainforest containing an incredible variety of orchids and creepers, lemurs, birds, insects, amphibians, and reptiles like Uroplatus fimbriatus, this incredibly cryptic lizard is always well scattered and difficult to find on the mainland, but easily spotted on tree trunks throughout the island  are readily to be seen ; the trees are typical eastern species such as Canarium, Ocotea, Ravensara and Tambourissa . In the afternoon, we carry on with our boat to reach the National Park of Masoala. We have a night expedition to look for aye-aye. Night in CHEZ AROL*

 

Day 3 : MAROANTSETRA National Park of Masoala

After breakfast, we continue our exploration to Masoala National Park. It takes two hours to cross the bay to join Ambanizana where we can visit the National park. The village of Ambanizana is a peaceful collection of bamboo and palm - thatched huts and shyly curious people. The park Masoala is situated in the north east of Maroantsetra, a trail leads up into the forest. Local agriculture has impinged on this,  and you will have to walk for half an hour or so before you reach true primary forest,  we can also see  the red-ruffed lemurs, the wealth of birds for which the peninsula is famous, there are good numbers of giant trees, often with buttressed trunks, and the canopy may reach to 35 m. Back to Maroantsetra at the end of the afternoon. Night in RELAIS MASOALA**.

 

 

Day 4 : MAROANTSETRA - TAMATAVE

After breakfast, transfer to the airport to fly to Tamatave. Transfer to the hotel. Night in / SHARON*** /  CAPRICORNE**.

 

Day 5 : TAMATAVE - ANKANIN' NY NOFY

After breakfast, transfer to the harbour to take the boat to Pangalanes channel. Ankanin’ ny Nofy means nest of the dreams. Surrounded by a huge and blue lake, this is the ideal place for rest and to be in contact direct with nature.

Night at PALMARIUM*..

 

Day 6 : ANKANIN’NY NOFY 

Day free: OPTIONAL VISIT OF THE « Palmarium » a private park where we can see many different kinds of animals: lemurs, chameleons inside a luxuriant rainy tropical forest. Night at PALMARIUM*.

 

Day 7 : ANKANIN’NY NOFY  - ANDASIBE

After breakfast, we continue our sailing until Brickaville, a small city very famous for its sugar cane and orange plantation. Brickaville is also a stopping place for travellers on taxi-brousse to Tamatave. Then a car is waiting for us to bring us to Andasibe through the green and luxuriant vegetation of the east, decorated with huge Bamboo, traveller's tree the emblem of Madagascar. Night at VAKONA***// FEON’NY ALA**

 

Day 8 : ANDASIBE

Morning visit of the Special Reserve of Andasibe, to see the Indri Indri the biggest lemurs of the island. This 810 ha reserve is a very unique with endemic fauna and flora. It contains a wide variety of orchids, canopy, animals like chameleons, tenrecs, and many birds.

In the afternoon, visit of a Betsimisaraka (The-Many-inseparable) village, the second largest tribe. In the evening, night safari to watch night active lemurs and the night active animals. Night in the same hotel.

 

Day 9 : ANDASIBE- TANA

Drive through the green landscape of the East with its huge tropical rainforest, its many small lakes and rivers. OPTIONAL VISIT of Reserve PYERERAS a private park for reptiles. Arriving in Tana in the afternoon, transfer to IC HOTEL** where we spend the night.

3°] THE LAND OF CONTRAST

4 nights - 5 days

 

Situated in the meridional part of the island, Fort dauphin is really a place for contrast not only on vegetation but on the landscape and culture as well. We have the humid part with its luxuriant vegetation and its huge mountain, the sea with its nice beach, then the “Androy” which is the dry land with its spiny forest. In a 5 days, you will have a good sample of the whole country’s scenery.  

Day  1:  FORT-DAUPHIN

Flight to Fort Dauphin. Arrival in Fort Dauphin, then transfer to hotel where we stay. Fort Dauphin lays in the south-east coast of Madagascar, doted with a nice beach. Its name came from the Fort constructed by French during their first settlement in Fort Dauphin.  Some remaining of these histories are still found like the ruins of «Fort des Portugais" , " Fort Flacourt". Situated between the Indian Ocean and the mountain chain of Anosy, Fort Dauphin benefits 2 distinct climates, the rainy east and the dry south which gives it 2 contrasted landscapes: the wet and green tropical forest and the dry and deserted plants like the numerous spiny bushes. You can have a visit of the city on foot to get acquainted with the life of Fort dauphin. You start your walk to the Fort Flacourt which is the vestige of French settlement in the city and now serves as the Malagasy army, then  the cathedral we walk along the coast to have a view of the most meridian point of the island, then we end our afternoon walk in the "Bazar be" or the picturesque local market. Night in the HOTEL KALETA*** /  NAHAMPOINA**

 

Day 2: FORT-DAUPHIN Excursion to LOKARO

Excursion to the Lokaro by boat along the fisherman village .After breakfast, drive up to Lanirano. Lake then we take the boat along a narrow channel through Aroyos (lagoon) with aquatic vegetation like pandanus, ravenala (palm trees), elephants' ears and birds like heron. Afterwards we cross the big lake of Ambavarano where the area of mangroves starts. We reach the beautiful village of Evatra, where the lake communicates with the sea. Here we can admire the numerous beautiful creeks, the bay of fishermen with their small old pirogues. We continue our sailing up to the Col where we have a wonderful view of the village and the mouth of the lake flowing into the sea. Here are the domains of nepenthes «carnivorous plants" and the "pervenche de madagascar ". After passing through many beautiful creeks we reach Lokaro bay, a wonderful and round bay with green water. Region of the prawns and crawfish. Back to Fort Dauphin at the end of the afternoon. Night in the HOTEL KALETA*** / NAHAMPOINA **

Day 3 : FORT-DAUPHIN Excursion to Ambovombe Market

Excursion to Ambovombe, it has a good Monday market especially the zebu Market. This day is also as it is a meeting point for local people to bring their goods and to make some meetings. After the market, continuation to Lac Anony, we can see 26 bird species with the famous Pseudocossyphus imerinus, the pink flamingo. This lake is quite important for the arctic bird migration. Drive back to Fort-Dauphin.

Day 4: FORT-DAUPHIN: Excursion Nahampoana

Visit the reserve de Nahampoana 7 km from Taolagnaro; we can see different kinds of lemurs, reptiles in their natural place. This is also a place to see the regional vegetation like the spiny forest, the carnivourous plants: Nepenthes Madagascariensis. During our walk we’ll see natural swimming pool, cascade, and cave. Night in the HOTEL KALETA*** / NAHAMPOINA **

 

DAY 5 : FORT  DAUPHIN – ANOTHER DESTINATION

Transfer to the airport to fly to another destination, or extension.

4°] THE KINGDOM OF LEMURS

4 nights - 5 days

 

 DAY 1 : FLIGHT TO FORT DAUPHIN

Arrival in to Fort Dauphin. Then transfer to hotel where you stay. Afternoon free. Fort Dauphin lies in the south-east coast of Madagascar. It is doted with two distinct climates which gives it two contrasted landscape: the east humid with its wet and green tropical forest and the south with its dry and deserted plants like the numerous spiny Bush. Night in HOTEL LE DAUPHIN***.

 

 DAY 2 : FORT-DAUPHIN - BERENTY

In the morning transfer to Berenty about 80 km from Fort - Dauphin. Today we can admire the big contrast between the east humid of Fort Dauphin and the south dry of Amboasary. This is also seen in the features of the population, the Antainosy with their Asian side and the Antandroy with their Bantu origin. Stop over the "Nepenthès" fields, carnivorous plants in Fort Dauphin, then to the triangular palm "Neodypsis Decari", an endemic palm to Fort Dauphin. Visit of the reserve with a special guide. Berenty is one of main reserve where we can see almost all the fauna and flora of the south. It is also known for the kingdom of lemurs such as the ring-tailed lemurs, the dancing lemurs and so many others. Night expedition to explore the reserve and to look for night active animals.

Night in BERENTY LODGE**.

 

 DAY 3 : BERENTY – FORT DAUPHIN

Day free. Get up at dawn as this is the period one can do his best bird watching, see the sifakas opening their arms to see the sun, and enjoy the coolness of the forest before going in to breakfast. The reserve is split into five parcels surrounded by extensive sisal plantations. The total area of about 265 ha is situated along the Mandrare River. The gallery forest is dominated by huge tamarind trees and is suffering from a severe invasion by the alien rubber vine. Berenty is a good place to watch birds, and 83 prominent and nine species are recorded.  In the afternoon, drive back to Fort Dauphin. Night in hotel HOTEL LE DAUPHIN***.

5°] MADAGASCAR IN THOUSAND VIEWS

11 nights - 12 days

 

 

DAY 1 : TULEAR - IFATY 20 km

Arrival in Tuléar, then we’ll drive for 20 km to Ifaty which is situated in the Deep South. We will cross the dry and sandy soil where local people suffer for the lack of drinking water. The landscape will be dominated by the spiny forest like the cactus, different euphorbiacea and didieracea. Many mangrove trees are lining along the coast alternated by Vezo villages which earn their living on fishing.  We will see many small pirogues, men go on fishing twice a day, children and women are waiting on the coast to fetch the fishermen and bring the fish to Tuléar for sale. Arrival in Ifaty at the end of the afternoon. Night in   HOTEL LE PARADISIER*** / IKOTEL**

 

DAY 2 : IFATY

Day off. Ifaty lies on the north of Tuléar. Situated in the largest lagoon of the country, it is an ideal place for relaxing. Many excursions are possible on the spot like whales watching or sea excursion with local boat. From July to mid September, whales are coming to the cool sea of Madagascar to give birth. It is a very spectacular experience as sometimes we will see the whales very near our boat. Situated in the largest lagoon of the country, Ifaty is also protected by a large coral reef which makes it an ideal place for diving and snorkelling. In the afternoon we can walk to the village of Mangily where we can have an experience off the Vezo Fishermen’s life, especially when the fishermen come back from fishing. Night in the same hotel.

 

DAY 3 : IFATY - ISALO :  247 km

After breakfast we head on to Isalo. This step brings us to the interior part of Madagascar, the land of Mahafaly. Along the way we’ll see many tombs of this tribe. Before seeing Isalo, we pass through the national park of Zombitse, a transition zone between the dry south and the land of Isalo, a formation of continental sandstone rocks. We will pass as well the plateaux des baobabs which makes Madagascar very famous of. There are 7 species of Baobabs in Madagascar whereas African continent has only 2 species. Arrival in Isalo around noon. Settling in and overnight in   RELAIS DE LA REINE*** / MOTEL ISALO**

 

DAY 4 : NATIONAL PARK OF ISALO

Day excursion in the National Park of Isalo and the famous «Natural swimming pool». This park is very famous for its strange geological formation. Composed with sandstone and eroded by the rain and the wind, this mountain offers the most spectacular scenery of the country. This is also a place where the BARA tribes used to bury their dead until they have enough money to buy a silver coffin. If we are lucky, we will see the lemur catta during this walk.  In the afternoon, we can go to the village of Ranohira, and then drive to the museum of the national park. Around 16.30, we’ll drive to the “The Natural window “where we see the beautiful sunset between rocks which looks like window. Accommodation in RELAIS DE LA REINE*** / MOTEL ISALO**.

 

Day 5 : ISALO - FIANARANTSOA : 282 Km

Drive northward to Fianarantsoa. Today we enter the rocky mountain chain of Andringitra which is very picturesque remaining of Arabian civilisation. Then the landscape changes when we enter the highland, we cross the rocky mountain chain of Andringitra which serves as a transition between the south and the fresh and green highland. Stop in Ambalavao to visit the « Papier Anteimoro » workshop, this is also the region of grapes plantation and wine industry. Arrival in Fianarantsoa, the capital of Betsileo tribes around 16.00.

Day 6 : FIANARANTSOA - RANOMAFANA : 88 Km

Early in the morning, day excursion to Ranomafana National Park. Today we explore the rain forest of Madagascar. Ranomafana is situated in the east. Apart from its huge tropical forest, it is also a thermal city where visitors can relax in the hot spring water. Before dinner expedition in the forest with special guide to see lemurs and other animals. Night in the hotel CENTREST SEJOUR** / IHARY HOTEL*

 

DAY 7: RANOMAFANA

Today we explore the rainy forest of Madagascar: the Ranomafana National Park which was created in 1991... This expedition in the forest with special guide enables us to see 12 species lemurs, the most important one the "golden lemurs" which has been discovered very recently, more than 100 birds, reptiles, butterflies and other insects. The area is covered with forest, in the higher areas the trees are festooned with mosses, lichens, and orchid. Afternoon free, we can have a visit Ranomafana village or go to the swimming pool of. Night in CENTREST SEJOUR** / IHARY HOTEL*

 

DAY 8 : RANOMAFANA  - ANTSIRABE 

Departure to Antsirabe after breakfast. Today we come across the highland which is characterised by rice fields on stage, its chilly climate and the population which has the features of Asian people. Stop in Ambositra, the capital of Zafimaniry craft to visit a wood-carving workshop. Continuation to Antsirabe in the afternoon. Arrival around 15.00. City tours of Antsirabe and visit a lapidary. Night in the AROTEL** / RESIDENCE CAMELIA**.

 

Day 9 : ANTSIRABE - MIANDRIVAZO - MASIAKAMPY : 427 km

Departure to Miandrivazo early in the morning, still across the highland. Today the landscape is changing, we will see rice fields, then red soil, many erosion « lavaka », then the vegetation becomes dryer. A very strange formation of granite because of the erosion. Arrival in Miandrivazo at noon, transfer to Masiakampy where the boat is waiting to sail to Tsiribihina. Beginning of the cruise. Stop around Sahambano.  Camping on the bank of the river on full board.

 

Day 10 : GORGE OF BEMARAHA

Departure around 07.30, breakfast on board. This day is for seeing animals like lemurs, crocodiles, birds, bats all along the sailing; and to have a look of primary forest. Around 09.30, trekking until the natural swimming pool for bathing or under the waterfalls. Lunch on board. Arrival in Berevo around 15.30. Visit of  Berevo village . Camping on the bank of the river on full board.

 

DAY 11 : COASTAL PLAIN OF MENABE  - TSIMAFANA - MORONDAVA 95 km

Departure around 07.30. After the end of « Gorge of Bemaraha », we cross the plain of Menabe which is characterised by the rice plantation on the bank of the river. We can also experience the life of Sakalava tribes who live along this big river. Arrival in Tsimafana. Then drive to Morondava during 3 hours. Stop in « ALLEE DES BAOBABS » for sunset photo, a beautiful area characterised by baobabs lane. Night in the hotel CHEZ MAGGIE** OR  RENALA**.

 

DAY 12 : MORONDAVA -  another destination

Transfer to the airport to fly to another destination or extension.

Day 1 : TULEAR - AMPANIHY 282 km

From Tuléar, we drive to Ampanihy, the capital of Mahafaly tribes, the centre of carpet. All along the road the we can see many spectacular tombs of these tribes with pictures. Night in the hotel RELAIS D’AMPANIHY or CAMPING .

 

Day 2 : AMPANIHY - BERENTY 272 km

Drive to Berenty. Today we cross the land of spiny forest, baobabs, and tortoises. This is the region of Antandroy or «The people of the thorns» Before reaching Berenty sisal plantation dominate the landscape, arrival their at the end of the afternoon. Night in the hotel BERENTY LODGE.

 

Day 3 : BERENTY

After breakfast, visit of the deciduous reserve with a special guide. Berenty is one of main reserve where we can see almost all the fauna and flora of the south. It is also known as the kingdom of lemurs such as the ring-tailed lemurs known as maki and the dancing lemurs known as sifaka. The other species is brown lemurs, and for nocturnal we can see lepilemurs, mouse lemurs. Before dinner night expedition to explore the reserve and to look for night active animals like lemurs in the spiny forest.

 

DAY 4 : BERENTY - FORT DAUPHIN 80 km

Morning drive to from Fort - Dauphin. We pass the Anosy Mountain chain then we arrive to the called "transition zone" dominated by the triangular palm "Neodypsis Decari", an endemic palm to Fort Dauphin We drive along the humid forest of the east, ,the landscape will be decorated with rice fields, green and luxuriant vegetation, many palms and mangoo trees. Few kilometres ahead we stop over the "Nepenthès" fields, carnivorous plants which attract insects by the scents of its liquid. Arrival in Fort Dauphin around noon. Night in the hotel LE DAUPHIN

 

Day 5 : FORT-DAUPHIN

Day at leisure. Many excursions are possible on the spot such as Pic Louis, at 529 km altitude, an unique view point to admire the whole region from east to west, drive until arriving at the foot of the mountain then walk up to the top path and offers views, the sisal factory about 3 km along the road to Lanirano, or the Portuguese Fort about 10 km west of Fort Dauphin which is the oldest building in Madagascar built by European. DAY 1: NOSY BE

Arrival in Nosy Be, transfer to the hotel. Doted with an almost perfect climate, fertile and prosperous soil. Nosy be is the ideal place for sugar, pepper and vanilla plantation which are the main source  for exportation. The main characteristic of Nosy Be is the heady scent of ylang ylang blossoms giving it the tourist-brochure name of «Perfumed isle ". DAY 2: NOSY BE Réserve LOKOBE

Day excursion to "LOKOBE Special reserve". Transfer to the harbour where we take a small boat to reach the reserve. Situated on the eastern side of the island of Nosy Be, the reserve of Lokobe is the remnants of the rainy tropical forest of the island. There are forty-two species of birds, black lemurs «maccacco maccacco" which are only found in this area. Thirty-five species of reptiles have been seen, seven of which are chameleons.  It is possible to visit the buffer zone on the north-east side of the peninsula where permits are not required. One of the main interests of Lokobe is the village where we can experience the life of local people.

At the end of the afternoon, back to the hotel. Stop in town to see the local market.

DAY 3: NOSY BE Excursion NOSY KOMBA - NOSY TANIKELY

Excursions to Nosy Komba and Nosy Tanikely which are isolated and tranquil isle accessible by boat. First we stop over to Nosy Komba which means island of lemurs.  It is the lemurs that brings in the visitors. One of the former glories of this island is its coral but it has sadly almost completely disappeared so snorkelling is no longer rewarding. Then we continue our excursion to Nosy Tanikely. It is a tiny island with a light house, very famous for its rich submarine park. It is also a rich place for waterspouts like diving, fishing, snorkelling where we can see an amazing variety of marine life - coral, starfish, anemones, every colour and shape of fish, turtles, lobsters... Back to Nosy Be at the end of the afternoon, transfer and night in BOUCANIERS HOTEL** / VANILLA ***

 

DAY 4: NOSY BE

Day at leisure.  Many excursions are possible; for instance go to Mont Passot the highest point of the island where we can have marvellous views of a series of deep-blue crater and sacred lake, said to contain crocodiles which are nothing else but the ancestors of the local people. Morning visit of the Special Reserve of Andasibe, to see the Indri Indri the biggest lemurs of the island. This 810 ha reserve is a very one with endemic fauna and flora. It contains a wide variety of orchids, canopy, endemic animals like chameleons, tenrecs, and many birds.

In the afternoon, visit of a Betsimisaraka (The-Many-inseparable) village, the second largest tribe and live; they cultivate rice and work on vanilla plantations. Night at the same hotel.

 

Day 3, ANDASIBE - ANKANIN' NY NOFY 130 km

Drive to Ankanin’ ny nofy after breakfast, stop in Brickaville, then continuation to Manambato where we take a boat for the transfer to Ankanin’ ny nofy. We cross the Rasoabe Lake then the Pangalanes channel built during the colonisation day for commercial use where we can admire many birds and the luxuriant vegetation of the east. 10°] Across the highland to the Green  East

Day 1, TANA – AMPEFY: 107 km:             2 HOURS

After breakfast, drive to Ampefy which takes 2 hours north west of Tana. We are in the highland profound with its small red villages overlooking the mountains. From now and then, we’ll see red rivers and streams in the middle of rice fields. What is quite impressing is the deep valleys with many erosion forming a strange landscape.

On the way, we can stop over “ Lemurs’ Park” a private park of 4ha with 6 species of lemurs, reptiles and other birds. Arrival in Ampefy at noon. Check-in at Hotel KAVITAH. In the afternoon, visit of “ the Chute de Lilly”, an impressive waterfall of 7 km from the hotel. Then if time and your physical condition allow, we can visit the “ Geysers of Andanomandraotra which is situated about 12 km from Ampefy with a very bad road. Overnight at hotel KAVITAH.

After breakfast, transfer to the main road where the bus to Soanierana will pick you up to Sainte Marie. Arrival around 10.00, then board on a boat to Sainte Marie with a speed boat. Arrival in Ambodifototra around 12.00. Then transfer to Hotel MORAMORA.

Morning drive straight to Belo through the Baobabs forest and the red soil of the west.  Arrival in Belo around noon, transfer by boat to continue to Bekopaka. This drive brings us to Madagascar profound; we can experience the real life of Malagasy people in the driest part of the country. Arrival in Bekopaka around 18.00. DAY 3, BEKOPAKA

Morning, after breakfast, day excursion to visit the reserve of « Tsingy de Bemaraha ». In the east of Antsalova south-east of Maintirano. This limestone mountain is classified as an international heritage. This massif is spectacularly eroded into a chaos of karsts pinnacle which gives it a very strange form. Here nature seems to be in perfect harmony with this wild and sharp limestone mountain. The flora consists of a dry western deciduous forest, plants typical of these dry limestone areas, such as species of Aloe and baobab Andasonia, the red-flowered flamboyant tree Delonix regia which is so widely planted in the tropics. Madagascar’s sole native banana Musa perrieri also occurs. We can also see plants which grow in the stone such us different species of pachypodium, orchids. Concerning the fauna we can see the stump-tailed chameleon Brookesia perarmata known from only a handful specimens, the bird list contains 53 species, the seven species of lemurs including Decken’s sifaka Propithecus verreauxi deckeni. DAY 4, BEKOPAKA - KIRINDY 150 km

After breakfast, we drive back to Morondava by a Four-wheel drive. This place is known for its baobab and its dry western forest. Night expedition to see six species of lemurs like lepilemur ruficandatus, microcebus myoxinus or murinus, phaner furcifer, cheirogaleus medius, mirza coquereli. Night in hotel KIRINDY.

 

DAY 5, KIRINDY - MORONDAVA

After breakfast, visit of the reserve to see two species of lemurs: propithecus verreauxi and fulvus rufus then drive to Morondava. Along the way, we stop in « ALLEE DES BAOBABS » for photo; this is the region of splendid Grandidier’s baobab, Andasonia grandidieri. Arrival in Morondava in the afternoon.
